Aftercare for Dreadlocks With Human Hair Extensions

Congratulations on your gorgeous new locs with human hair extensions! Extensions are a stunning way to add length, fullness, and a whole lot of personality to your crown. But, like any masterpiece, they need some extra love and attention to keep them thriving. Here's your guide to caring for your locs while keeping it low-stress and totally in sync with your dread goals!

1. Chemical-Treated Extensions (Especially Blonde): Handle With Care

If your extensions are chemically treated (especially blonde), do NOT color or bleach them.

  • Why? Blonde extensions and other heavily processed human hair are already fragile. Adding more chemicals can cause the hair to literally disintegrate into dust over time.

  • Think of it this way: that blonde hue was a journey for the hair, and it's reached its final destination- no need to push it further.

Need a Fun Change Instead of Coloring or Bleaching?

  • Add some personality with loc wraps or synthetic locs!

  • Whether it's one bold wrap or 20, you can incorporate pops of color into your locs without the damage.

  • Feel free to bring in your own, or we can create custom pieces to match your vibe.

2. Extensions Need Extra Maintenance

Your human hair extensions are fabulous, but they require more upkeep than natural locs.

  • Plan for maintenance appointments every 1-2 months during the first year to keep your extensions securely in place.

  • After the first year, you can space out appointments to every 2-3 months, depending on how much styling and washing you do.

3. Loose ends vs. Blunted Ends: What You Need to Know

  • Loose ends: If you've chosen loose ends for a softer look, they need to be cared for like non-dreaded hair:

    • Use a lightweight conditioner to keep them hydrated and prevent fraying.

    • Brush them gently and avoid harsh treatments to maintain their smooth texture.

  • Blunted ends: If your locs are blunted, they require regular palm rolling to maintain their shape and prevent unraveling:

    • Roll the ends between your palms for a few minutes every day or as part of your weekly routine. This helps them stay tight, smooth, and in sync with the rest of your locs.

4. The Life Span of Extensions: 2-4 Years

Your human hair extensions have a natural life span and will slowly shed over time.

  • Care Determines Longevity:

    • With gentle handling, proper maintenance, and regular tightening, they can last up to 4 years.

    • Neglect or rough treatment can shorten their life span to around 2 years.

  • Natural Shedding: Extensions will naturally shed from wear and tear- it's all part of the journey.

5. Washing Your Locs: Less Is More

Extensions are sensitive to over-washing, so stick to a mindful routine.

  • First 2 Weeks: Keep your locs completely dry to allow the extensions to bond with your natural hair.

  • After 2 Weeks:

    • Use a residue-free shampoo and a lightweight conditioner for the loose ends.

    • Focus on cleansing your scalp and let the water rinse through the locs naturally. Avoid scrubbing or twisting the extensions.

    • Squeeze out excess water and let them air dry completely or use a microfiber towel to prevent lint buildup.

6. Extra TLC for Extensions

Human hair extensions are more delicate than your natural hair and need mindful care:

  • Hydration: Lightly mist your locs with rosewater or aloe vera to keep them moisturized.

  • Avoid Heavy Products: Skip oils, butters, or creams- they can cause buildup and attract dirt. LIghtweight conditioners are fine as long as they are rinsed thoroughly.

  • Be Gentle: When separating or styling, take your time to avoid unnecessary tension or pulling on the extensions.

7. Protect Your Locs While You Sleep

Friction can wear down extensions, so protecting your locs at night is key:

  • Wrap them in a satin or silk durag or scarf before bed

  • Use a satin or silk pillowcase if you prefer to let your locs breathe overnight.

8. Maintenance: The Secret to Longevity

Staying on top of your maintenance is essential for keeping your extensions looking flawless.

  • Tightening Frequency: Plan for every 1-2 months in the first year, and 2-3 months thereafter de[ending on your routine and lifestyle.

  • Professional Check-Ins: Maintenance appointments will secure loose hairs, reinforce extensions, and keep your locs thriving.

9. Embrace the Natural Evolution

Extensions are designed to enhance your loc journey, but they're not forever. Over time, they'll naturally shed and evolve as your hair grows. This isn't a flaw- it's part of the beauty of wearing extensions and connecting with the natural process.

10. Stay Grounded, Stay Glowing

Your locs and extensions are more than a hairstyle- they're a reflection of your journey and energy. Treat them with care, embrace the process, and trust that your crown will continue to evolve into something magical.
